Ever wonder why you’ve heard “In-house Counsel” is the best gig in the legal profession? In-house counsels serve wide-ranging legal roles, may have a seat at the boardroom table, and, generally, do not have billable hours.

In-house attorneys do a bit of everything.  An in-house attorney or department may deal with purchase agreements, employment contracts, copyright filings, international commercial law, and various other legal issues. As an in-house counsel, you have only client and are therefore able to focus on that client’s specific legal needs.  An in-house attorney may often become a trusted business advisor to high-level management. The business advisor role gives the in-house attorney a seat in the boardroom allowing them to participate in matters from the beginning as opposed to private firm attorneys who may be invited into a matter much later in the process. Additionally, in-house attorneys often hire and oversee private firm attorneys.

The In-House Counsel Q & A session

The Law and Entrepreneurship Student Association (LESA) is presenting a panel discussion with several Oregon in-house counsel attorneys. Each lawyer will compare and contrast in-house counsel roles from private law firm life, and explain how their career paths led them to in-house counsel positions. All students are welcome. Students interested in business law, corporate law, international law, intellectual property, and the in-house counsel role are especially encouraged to attend.

If you are a 1L or 2L and have an interest in engaging in more business law opportunities at the law school, consider applying to be a part of next year’s LESA Board of Directors.  LESA will hold elections this spring for additions to the Board next year; so, come get a taste for what Law and Entrepreneurship is all about at this In-house Counsel event.
