Intellectual Property for PractitionersSpring Semester 2009 Saturday Copyrights Class is Canceled--Stay Tuned for Announcements of Upcoming Course OfferingsSaturdays in 2009: Oregon Law Offers Intellectual Property Courses in Portland For PractitionersThe University of Oregon School of Law is pleased to announce the launch of the "INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY FOR PRACTITIONERS" course series, to be taught at the University of Oregon's White Stag Building in downtown Portland. Beginning in January of 2009, Oregon Law will offer an ongoing series of courses, taught by experienced intellectual property practitioners, that will provide the practicing lawyer (and other professionals whose work involves intellectual property issues) the fundamentals of intellectual property law. In addition to building their knowledge base in this critical area of the law, practicing attorneys will receive CLE credit (pending). The first course in the series, offered during the Spring 2009 semester, will be a foundational course in Copyrights. The class will be taught by Bullivant Houser Bailey's Michael Ratoza, a well known practitioner, speaker, and writer on intellectual property topics. The course will consider the limited statutory monopoly granted to creators and owners of protectable works in a variety of media. Topics covered will include the subject matter of copyright; the exclusive rights afforded to creators and owners and the distinction between creation and ownership (including work for hire); first sale, fair use, and infringement; the formalities of registration and notice, and copyright duration, ownership, transfer, licensing, and termination. The class will particularly emphasize practical business practices, as well as the usefulness of copyright in non-traditional environments, including real property development and management. A t! echnical or science background is not required, nor is a background in IP required. Keeping in mind your busy professional schedules, the Copyright course will be offered on fourteen *Saturday mornings* from 9:00am to 11:50 a.m., January 17 through April 25, 2009 (with a Saturday off during Spring Break week). The cost will be $2000. Those participating will receive a significant discount on future course offerings in the series. To register, please contact Rachel Johnson no later than November 25, 2008. For more information about the Copyrights course, Oregon Law's Intellectual Property For Practitioners series, or Oregon Law's Portland programs in general, please contact Professor Steven Bender. |
